Red Well Spring

This is a sulphurous, but still drinkable spring that can be found off the A67 in Gainford. It can be found on a road that runs along a lay-by. The water is amazing!

This well is located near Gainford and is considered a holy one. Legend has it that St. Cuthbert's remains were found at Gainford by the bearers. It is accessible via a path at the back of St. Cuthbert's church on the village Green. It's located at the start of the Gainford Millennium Green Photo Trail.

Description
The well is located on the main street of this village, approximately one mile from Scotch Corner (A1). It has a large frontage, and water is constantly flowing down the street when I visited. According to what I've been told, it does so every time. Although the water is pleasant, it seems to be very high in ninerals. In an out-of print book on holy wells, the water is listed as a Holy' well.
