Description

Woolley Creek enters the Sunwapta River 13 kilometers north of the Columbia Icefields Center, across the valley from a small mountain of rock in between the road and the river. Best views of the falls are from the north side of this rock.Woolley Creek makes a dash down the sides of the glacially sculpted Sunwapta Valley hidden in a contorted alcove, but visible enough that the falls are noteworthy from the Icefields Parkway. The falls look to stand about 150 feet tall, but because of their cascading nature and the way the creek twists and turns amid the chunky bedrock, only about a third to maybe half of the falls can be seen from any given point along the road. Getting closer is definitely a viable option, but would require fording the Sunwapta River. The river is heavily braded in this area, but some of the channels may still be over thigh deep, so attempt this at your own risk.
