Kirkjufellsfoss is visible along Route 54 on the north side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, about 2.5km west of the center of the town of Grundarfjörður. There is a signed car park area just west of the lagoon where the falls are visible (somewhat distantly), and obvious trails which lead one-quarter of a kilometer to the bridge at the top of the falls.Kirkjufellsfoss is modest, low lying waterfall which drops 54 feet in two broad steps as its stream makes its final plunge to a lagoon along the shore of the ocean, with the famous mountain Kirkjufell looming above. The two steps of the falls are separated by about 150 linear feet, the upper tier dropping 28 feet in anywhere from two to five side-by-side plunges (depending on the volume of water in the stream), while the lower tier splits into two primary channels - one side cascading and then plunging, while the other plunges a sheer 26 feet. Just below the falls a large lagoon is formed by the highway's dike, with the freshwater stream pooling on one side, and the ocean on the other.
