Description

Hundafoss is accessed from the visitor center at Skaftafell National Park, which is found two kilometers off of Highway 1, either 66km east of the roundabout in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, or 54km west of Jökulsárlón - the turn off is well signed. From the visitor center, follow the well marked Svartifoss trail past the camping area, then branching to the right and up stairs. The overlook for Hundafoss will be encountered 1.1 kilometers up the moderate trail, immediately before a trail junction and a bridge across the creek.Magnúsarfoss is the second and the smallest of the three waterfalls encountered along the popular Svartifoss trail in Skaftafell National Park. The falls drop 31-feet down a steeply inclined chute, then plunging along a jutting edge in the small cliff face. Like Hundafoss found just downstream, Magnúsarfoss is somwewhat obstructed by the surrounding foliage (though to a lesser extent), and as such is essentially an overlooked attraction along the trail - we saw no other hikers we passed along the trail bothering to stop to view the falls. Though the Bærjargil is not a large stream by any means, it does swell to a much larger size while the winter snow is melting, and the falls will become considerably more impressive at such time. When we visited in late August the volume was considerably reduced.
