Cherry Lake Falls

Description

The largest of the several waterfalls along Cherry Creek is produced where the stream splits into two channels and horsetails down the cliffs at the east end of the glorified puddle known as Cherry Lake. The south and larger channel slides down a smooth cascade for about 20 feet before dropping over a steeper fall in steps of 39 and 19 feet. The north channel spills down a pretty veiling fall, then enters a long sliding cascade before plunging again over a final 15 foot fall. The split in the stream which produces the two segments was observed many years ago to have been produced in part by the presence of a large logjam near the top of the falls. Should the logjam shift severely the falls may also shift to occupy only one channel - presently the north channel will run dry by late spring with the majority of the stream flowing down the south channel.
