Middle Hamma Hamma Falls

Description

Take US Highway 101 north from Hoodsport for about 13.75 miles, or south from Brinnon for 11-1/2 miles, to Hamma Hamma Road - also signed for the Hamma Hamma Recreation Area, and National Forest Road 25. Follow Hamma Hamma Road for 6.4 miles to a T-junction shortly after crossing Cabin Creek (the crossing is not signed). Turn right following the signs to the Lena Lake trailhead, and continue another 5-1/3 miles to a pullout where the falls can be seen through the trees. A fairly obvious path leads 150 feet to the rocks adjacent to the falls for an up close view.Middle Hamma Hamma Falls is the smallest of three reasonably accessible waterfalls found along the Hamma Hamma River. The river forms this 19-foot tall cascade where it splits in two by a protruding prow of bedrock and accelerates down parallel chutes into a narrow trough in the rock. The river immediately below the falls is squeezed between a set of bedrock benches, constricting to perhaps no more than 5 feet across, but running at least 20 or more feet deep, with a swift current to boot.
Like the Lower Falls found just downstream, Middle Hamma Hamma Falls has a drainage basin of about 20 square miles in area ranging from high alpine meadows to the low valley floor, which ensures that a significant volume of water will always pour over this waterfall, however as there is no permanent snow or ice feeding into the river, once the winter snow melts out the volume of the river will still drop in volume by a noticeable amount.
