Name of Waterfall

Powerhouse Falls

Description

Powerhouse Falls is the second of three major waterfalls along the Nespelem River. The falls occur within the most constricted section of the Nespelem's canyon as the river drops over successive 10 and 55 foot ledges. The falls are partially visible from the main road through the area, but are better seen from within the canyon. Being that the falls are located on Colville Tribal land, I am not sure whether public access to the falls is openly allowed, but I saw no signage that suggested otherwise. If you see any indication that approaching the falls on foot is discouraged, please respect tribal rights and stay on the public corridor if you are told to do so so we may enjoy the land in the future.I don't know the historical accuracy of the name of this waterfall, but I was illustrated as such in a book dating back to the 60's I found in the King County Library system. The name of the falls stems from the former presence of a hydroelectric powerhouse at the base of the falls, the foundation of which is still intact and used as a viewing platform at the pool below the falls. The 4th edition of Greg Plumb's "Waterfall Lover's Guide to the Pacific Northwest" cites this entry as Nespelem Falls.
