About This Spring
## Overview Annapolis Rock Spring is a natural spring located along the Appalachian Trail near Boonsboro, Maryland, in Washington County. Situated in the rugged terrain of South Mountain, the spring feeds from a rock outcropping and is accessed via a PVC pipe protruding from the rock face, delivering a steady flow of water. Visitors have reported that the water tastes delicious and refreshingly clean. The spring serves as a welcome water source for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers and day hikers alike who are making the trek out to the famous Annapolis Rock overlook — one of the most popular viewpoints on the Maryland section of the AT, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Cumberland Valley. The hike to the spring is a moderately challenging out-and-back trail covering approximately 4.9 miles round trip with about 875 feet of elevation gain. Most hikers complete the route in roughly 2.5 hours. The trail passes through mixed hardwood forest along the spine of South Mountain, and the spring is a natural stopping point for refilling water bottles along the way. ## Directions Starting from the Boonsboro, MD area: 1. The hike is rated **moderate** due to the steady elevation gain over rocky terrain — sturdy footwear is recommended. The spring itself emerges from a rock formation and is channeled through a PVC pipe, making it relatively easy to fill water bottles. The flow has been described as consistent, though seasonal conditions may affect output. While the water has been reported to taste excellent by numerous visitors, it is an untreated natural source. Beyond the spring, hikers continuing to the Annapolis Rock overlook will be rewarded with dramatic cliff-top views stretching across the valley below — a particularly stunning sight during fall foliage season. The overlook is also a popular spot for rock climbing and bouldering. The trail and spring are accessible year-round, though winter conditions can make the rocky sections slippery. Spring and fall are the most popular seasons for visiting. There is no fee to park at the trailhead, and no facilities are available at the parking area.
