About This Spring
## Overview Bigelow Hot Springs — also known as Deer Creek Hot Springs — is a free, natural hot spring tucked along the northern bank of the McKenzie River in Oregon's Willamette National Forest. Located just off Highway 126 and roughly 60 miles east of Eugene, it's one of the more accessible roadside hot springs in the central Oregon Cascades. The spring feeds a small, sand-and-gravel soaking pool that comfortably fits two to four people. During the summer and fall months, water temperatures typically range from 102°F to 104°F — ideal for a relaxing soak. In winter and early spring, however, the river level rises and cold water mixes into the pool, often making it too cool to enjoy. For the best experience, plan your visit between late June and October. Sitting at approximately 2,000 feet in elevation, Bigelow Hot Springs is situated in a scenic stretch of the McKenzie River corridor. The surrounding forest and river views make for a pleasant setting, though the site sees high visitor traffic during peak season. Clothing-optional use has historically been common here. There is no fee to visit, but nighttime access is restricted. ## Directions 1. From **Eugene, OR**, head east on **Highway 126** (McKenzie Highway) toward the town of Blue River. 2. Continue east on Highway 126 past Blue River for approximately 5–6 miles. 3. The hot spring is located on the **north side of the road**, along the northern bank of the McKenzie River. Watch for a small pullout area on the right (north) side of the highway. 4. The pool is close to the road — you won't need to hike far. Look for a short, informal trail leading down to the riverbank. **GPS Coordinates:** 44.241, -122.058 **USGS Map Quad:** Belknap Springs, OR (7.5-minute quadrangle) / McKenzie Bridge 15-minute quad ## What to Expect **The Pool:** The soaking pool is small and natural, formed from sand and gravel along the river's edge. It accommodates roughly two to four bathers at a time. Water clarity has been described as murky, and no notable odor has been reported. **Temperature:** Expect 102–104°F during summer and fall. In winter and spring, rising river levels and cold water intrusion can make the pool lukewarm or even cold — most visitors consider it not worth the trip during those months. **Crowds & Etiquette:** This is a high-use site due to its easy roadside access. Weekends in summer can be busy, so arriving early or on a weekday improves your chances of having the pool to yourself. Clothing-optional bathing has been the norm here, but be respectful of other visitors. **Facilities:** There are no restrooms, trash cans, or developed facilities at the site. The closest food and gas are in Eugene to the west or Bend to the east. Pack out everything you bring in — moderate trash has been noted as an issue at this location. **Bugs & Wildlife:** Expect moderate to high bug activity during warmer months, particularly mosquitoes near the river. Wildlife sightings in the area are moderate — you're in the heart of the Cascades, so deer, birds, and the occasional river otter are possible. **Camping:** There is no on-site camping, but several developed and dispersed camping options are available nearby along the McKenzie River corridor within Willamette National Forest. **Best Season:** Summer and early fall offer the warmest water and most enjoyable conditions. Avoid winter and spring unless you're prepared for a cool soak.
