Bittersweet Falls
From downtown Middlebury take Route 23 north to Weybridge Hill, then turn left onto James Road, followed by a right onto Bittersweet Falls Road. Proceed about six-tenths of a mile down to the base of the hill where a wide spot in the road marks the falls, which should be visible to the left.Bittersweet Falls is a humble little waterfall found along Beaver Brook where it descends through a rather impressive gorge carved in a prominent shale formation. The creek drains from gently undulating pasture and farmlands upstream, and maps make the area look fairly saturated with ground water, yet the falls are usually just a trickle. After periods of extended rain or during snow melt there may be a considerably larger volume of water present, at which time the falls will spread out to as much as 30 feet wide. However once runoff has been depleted the creek will revert to a tiny stream again and the falls back to its usual meager stature (at best).
