About This Waterfall
Take Highway 1 to the town of Borgarnes, then bear west onto Route 54. Follow Route 54 along the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula to where the falls are visible on the right, immediately adjacent to the junction of Routes 54 and 574 near the town of Buðir. Slightly closer views can be had from a couple of gravel roads just east of the junction.Bjarnarfoss is a moderately tall waterfall visible from Highway 54 on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The falls leap about 260 feet in two distinct steps, but with only a minor pause in between. The upper tier seems to be frequently (if not almost always) buffeted by the wind, causing the plume of water to dance all over the cliff face - even blowing straight up when strong gusts hit. The lower tier is a much more consolidated plunge, and it appears as if a part of the stream may actually seep into the ground between the two tiers, because the amount of water falling in the upper tier does not appear to be equal to the amount in the lower tier, at least when we visited (this may just be an illusion however).Bjarnar is Icelandic for Bear, a name which is somewhat odd given that there are no Bears natively living in Iceland (though apparently Polar Bears do occasionally make visits on icebergs which drift over from Greenland).
