About This Waterfall
Blackwell Falls is produced as the melt streams from the remnants of the Blackwell Glacier cascade into Granite Lake on the north side of Snowshoe Peak in the Cabinet Mountains. The falls drop a total of around 1,200 vertical feet in a long chain of slides and cascades, with a larger nearly vertical drop near the bottom of the formation. Because the Blackwell Glacier is greatly reduced from its former stature and consists mainly of remnant snow patches now, the falls do not flow with nearly the gusto they exhibited during the mid 20th century. In abnormally dry years the falls may be reduced to a trickle (and would likely be difficult to see from across Granite Lake under such conditions) but don't seem likely to dry out entirely.
