About This Spring

## Overview Cascate del Mulino is one of Tuscany's most iconic natural hot springs — a stunning series of cascading travertine pools filled with warm, sulfurous thermal water, open to the public free of charge, 24 hours a day, year-round. Located just south of the village of Saturnia in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, these falls have drawn visitors for thousands of years. The thermal water originates from the Sorgente del Gorello, a volcanic spring that feeds into the Gorello stream before tumbling over a series of naturally formed limestone terraces. The water maintains a constant temperature of approximately 37°C (98.6°F) throughout the year, making it comfortable for bathing in every season. Rich in sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals, the water has historically been valued for its therapeutic properties — the ancient Romans are believed to have bathed here, and local legend attributes the springs' creation to the god Saturn, from whom the town of Saturnia takes its name. The distinctive milky-blue pools are formed by centuries of calcium carbonate deposits, creating natural basins of varying depths where bathers can soak while surrounded by the lush Tuscan countryside. The sulfurous smell is noticeable but mild, and the mineral-rich water has long been reported to benefit skin conditions and joint pain. Unlike the nearby Terme di Saturnia luxury spa (which charges an entrance fee and uses the same thermal source), Cascate del Mulino remains completely free and open to all. ## Directions 1. From the village of **Saturnia**, head south on the **SP10** (Strada Provinciale della Follonata) toward Montemerano. 2. After approximately **2 km**, you will see the cascading falls on your left-hand side — they are visible from the road. 3. There is a **free parking area** along the road near the falls, though it can fill up quickly during peak season (summer weekends and holidays). Arriving early in the morning or later in the evening is recommended. 4. From the parking area, it is a very short walk down to the pools. **GPS Coordinates:** 42.648282, 11.51277 ## What to Expect The cascading pools are set against a picturesque backdrop of green hills and farmland, making this one of the most photogenic hot springs in all of Europe. The main waterfall drops several meters into a large pool, and below it, a series of smaller terraced basins allow bathers to find a spot at their preferred depth and temperature. The pools are open around the clock, and nighttime bathing under the stars is a popular experience. There are no facilities on-site — no changing rooms, restrooms, or lifeguards — so come prepared. The travertine rock can be slippery, so water shoes are highly recommended. The bottom of the pools can be muddy in places. During summer months and weekends, the site can become very crowded. For a more peaceful experience, visit during weekday mornings, off-season months (late autumn through early spring), or after dark. Even in winter, the warm water temperature makes bathing pleasant. Be mindful of your belongings, as the area is open and unattended. Bring a towel and a bag for wet clothes. The sulfur content in the water may leave a lingering smell on swimwear and skin — rinsing off afterward is advisable. Nearby Saturnia and Montemerano offer restaurants, accommodations, and other amenities.
