About This Waterfall

Chickoon Creek is a tributary of the Lewis River which enters the Lewis about halfway between Lower Lewis River Falls and the Cussed Hollow bridge on the Lewis River Road. The creek flows through a substantial canyon over its final two miles which features some very interesting geology - much of which is not easily accessible without technical climbing equipment and possibly wet suits. About three-quarters of a mile upstream from the Lewis the creek plunges over an exceptionally scenic 78-foot tall waterfall into a grotto lined with a huge thicket of ferns. The cliff producing the falls is broad and level, and when the volume of the creek is high during the winter and spring months the falls can stretch to as much as 60 feet across (if not more) - while during the summer it will contract to a much narrower column of water. Access to Chickoon Creek Falls is not terribly difficult, but it does require wading and traveling through areas which both pose some possible geologic hazards and could also be easily impacted by increased visitation. For these reasons, we're discouraging visitation of the falls.
