Description

Take West Hill Road off of Route 118 just west of Montgomery. West Hill Road is a large loop that comes back out on Route 118 just a few hundred feet away from where it starts. Taking the western entrance of this looping road will save you a few miles. Drive about 3 miles up West Hill Road and take a left onto Creamery Road. Follow the road until it gets rough, then stop as the road quickly degenerates to a rough and rocky cobble. The bridge is just around the corner. Cross the bridge and look for a trail leading into the woods on your left and follow the trail to the clearing near the pool at the base of the falls.West Hill Brook follows a sinuous path deep in the woods of Montgomery. It passes beneath a covered bridge, then makes a pair of descents into a deep pool below. The upper tier is a more shallow veiling cascade that descends about 7 or 8 feet over a bank of schist, to land in the small pool that forms the brink of the lower tier. The lower tier splits, a much smaller rivulet descends through a series of shallow potholes while the majority of the flow is consolidated in a cornice that funnels the water into the deep pool below. The Creamery Covered Bridge sits just upstream from the waterfall and a small picnic area that seems fairly well maintained when you consider its fairly remote location. The bridge was built in 1883 by Sheldon and Savannah Jewett.
