About This Waterfall
Eldegardsfossen is located adjacent to Rv53 approximately halfway between Årdalstangen and Øvre Årdal. Look for a large pullout on the uphill side of the road about a quarter of a kilometer south of the southern entrance to the Midnestunnelen. There is plenty of room to park, but in order to view the falls one must stand on the shoulder of the road, where there is not much room, so be mindful of passing traffic.Eldegardsfossen is a moderate to low volume waterfall which can be seen spraying down the mountainside adjacent to Rv53 along Årdalsvatnet about halfway between the towns of Årdalstangen and Øvre Årdal. Based on one-meter contour topographic maps, the falls drop for a total of approximately 160 meters (525 feet). When surveyed by the World Waterfall Database in June of 2011, the visible portion of the falls were measured at 135 meters (444 feet), so nearly the entire waterfall is visible from the road, however due to the effects of foreshortening it does not look nearly that tall at first glance. The falls consist of two distinct tiers, the larger being a sliding horsetail which leads into a sheer plunge at its end, followed by a much smaller tier where the stream constricts into a narrow trough before flowing under the road. There appears to be another tier below the road where the stream falls into the lake, but trees line the area such that there is no way to view whatever may be there without being in a boat on the lake.
