About This Waterfall

This waterfall is about ½ km downstream from the 4th bridge over the Maligne River in Maligne Canyon within Jasper National Park. Those looking for a less strenuous (but less scenic) climb back to the parking lot at the top of the canyon may want to start at the 5th Bridge Trailhead, and walk upstream to the falls. Most of the underground streams that engorge the Maligne River back to the size of an actual river - rather than the alpine brook sized stream seen in the upper stretch of Maligne Canyon - spring forth at the water’s level. The small stream that makes up this waterfall, however, gushes out about 40 feet above the river and cascades down a heavily stratified outcrop of rock, creating very scenic patterns as it spills into the Maligne. Despite the visually low magnitude of the stream, it is not seasonal and flows very consistently all year long. The one mistake people might make when trying to hunt this one down is turning around too soon. This waterfall has no recognized name but has been referred to more often than not by the generic moniker of Fan Falls in certain circles. Until and unless a more acceptable title is found, we'll run with this.
