About This Waterfall
Faxi is found just off Route 35 south of Geysir, and can be easily accessed via a 5-minute detour from the popular Golden Circle tour route. At the junction of Route 37 and 35 near Geysir, follow Route 35 south toward Selfoss and Reykholt for 6km. Watch for a sign on the west side of the road pointing to Við Faxa (this is not the standard red and white Attraction sign however), and follow the indicated road for just a few hundred meters to the parking area overlooking the falls. A very short path leads to a viewing deck and picnic table overlooking the falls.Faxi is a small but broad waterfall along the Tungufljót in an area of broad, flat farm lands where one would not otherwise assume there to be waterfalls. Here the river stretches to a width of about 300 feet and plunges in a broad fall of 22 feet in height, bypassed on the left by a small fish ladder. A second smaller channel of the river branches off to the right forming a more isolated segment to the fall, however there appeared to be no way to actually view this portion of the falls without hiking downstream (perhaps in the river itself) from the falls. This waterfall is marked on many maps as Vatnsleysufoss, and on some maps is mapped rather inaccurately several kilometers further upstream. The signs at the falls mark the site as Faxa, but call the waterfall itself Faxi (or Faxi Waterfall), further adding to the confusion.
