About This Waterfall

Folaldafoss is found adjacent to Route 939 as it climbs to Oxi Pass between Berufjörður and Suðurdalur. This road is used to bypass a section of Highway 1 and can eliminate about 60km of driving between Egilsstaðir and Hofn, however the road is steep, unpaved and not suitable for trailers. The falls can be seen from a large, obvious pull out about 2.3km north of Highway 1 in Berufjörður, the junction of which is about 20km north of the town of Djúpivogur.Folaldafoss is the lowermost of a multitude of significant waterfalls along the Berufjarðará, which runs along Route 939 as it climbs over Oxi Pass as a shortcut of sorts between two sections of Highway 1 in the East Fjords. The falls occur as the stream is squeezed through a narrow gap in one of the literally dozens of distinct cliff bands which run across the valley, causing the stream which otherwise flows southeast to bend suddenly almost due north. As the stream is redirected it funnels through a narrow gap and plunges a sheer 54-feet into a small bowl with an attractive pool at its base. Below the pool is a small cascading fall of another 5-feet, after which the stream bends back to the southwest and resumes its course to the head of the Berufjörður.
