About This Waterfall

From Pemberton, take Highway 99 north to the small town of Mount Currie, then as Highway 99 makes a sharp right toward Lillooet, continue straight on Birkenhead River Road, following signs pointing to D'arcy and Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park. Continue for 16.7 kilometers then turn left onto the Birkenhead Lake Forest Service Road - which as of May 2018 was very poorly signed, if you cross the railroad tracks a third time, you've gone about 3.8km too far. Follow the Birkenhead Lake FSR for about 4.5km and then begin looking for windows through the trees which will afford a view far across the valley where the far can be seen. There are no obviously clear views of the falls, so it helps to have a spotter watching for the falls while the driver concentrates on the road.Fowl Creek Falls is a potentially regionally significant waterfall located between Pemberton and Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park. The falls drop an estimated 150 meters (500 feet) in three distinct steps, withe the first two tiers falling as horsetail type steps, and the third tier veiling outward over a broader expanse and falling nearly vertically. Because the falls can only be easily seen from a distance of over 3 kilometers away, determining the height of each tier of the falls (as well as the entire formation) is quite difficult, but rough estimates based on topographic data would suggest drops of about 60, 40, and 50 meters respectively. In addition, the distant views offered from across the Birkenhead River valley results in the middle tier of the falls being mostly obscured from view by the trees lining the creek in the vicinity of the falls. There may not be any way to see the entire falls clearly without either climbing further up the side of the mountain east of the road, or undertaking what looks to be an extremely arduous cross-country hike toward the base of the falls. Fowl Creek drains from a high plateau basin located entirely above the 1200 meter level, covering an area of approximately 19 square kilometers (7.6 square miles). The basin rises to elevations of just over 2,200 meters on Mount Ronyane and features two modest lakes. Though there are no glaciers feeding into the creek, the high elevation of the basin ensures a significant heavy winter snow pack will result in a prolonged melt season feeding a large volume of water into the creek. Once the winter snow pack has melted off - which won't likely occur until mid August in most years - the volume of water present at the falls will be reduced, but flow should remain decent through the driest months of the summer.
