About This Waterfall
Geitafoss is accessed from the parking area at Goðafoss, just off Highway 1 east of Akureyri. From the junction of Highway 1 and Route 828 at the south end of Akureyri, follow Highway 1 east for just over 43km and turn right where a sign points to Goðafoss, and park in the designated area. Follow the trails downstream along the river to the footbridge next to the highway, where the falls can be seen.Geitafoss is the smaller downstream sibling to the well known Goðafoss, along the Skjálfandafljót east of the city of Akureyri. The falls can be seen just a few hundred feet upstream from the Highway 1 bridge and the adjacent footbridge, but are often overlooked by visitors to Goðafoss because the primary parking area bypasses the lesser waterfall. The falls drop 18-feet in a churning chute adjacent to a partially formed natural arch in the adjoining cliff wall. The falls can be partially viewed in conjunction with Goðafoss upstream, but the tandem views are partially obstructed by the shape of the gorge. Given the size of the Skjálfandafljót, it's quite likely that during periods of flooding this waterfall gets largely swallowed up as the depth of the river increases within the gorge - the water below the falls will have nowhere to go but up. Flood levels of over 24,000 cubic feet per second (nearly 5x the average summer volume of the river) have been recorded, which would likely fill up the gorge by a considerable amount.
