About This Waterfall

Giessbachfälle is a long series of falls and cascades which drop down the mountainside into the south side of Lake Brienz. The falls are comprised of at least twelve distinct tiers, but there are likely more than that. The falls are commonly said to drop anywhere from 300 to 600 meters, and an exact height may not ever have been established partially due to the fact that parts of the falls are difficult to access. The twelve identified tiers drop a total of 224 meters in steps of 15, 33, 12, 13, 24, 12, 20, 35, 25, 16, 8, and 11 meters respectively, according to the book "Die Wasserfälle der Schweiz". This likely accounts only for the visible portion of the falls visible upstream from the famous Giessbach Hotel located next to the falls - at least three more tiers are known to exist below the hotel. As the falls do continue all the way down to Lake Brienz, and the top of the falls appears to be located between 900 and 1000 meters in elevation, the total height of the falls should be at least 336 meters in all, and probably closer to 375-400 meters, and possibly as much as 430 meters.
