About This Waterfall
Cascade du Gietro is a long, tall, potentially high volume series of falls and cascades along the meltwater stream which drains from the Geitro Glacier into Lac du Mauvoisin. The top of the falls appears to be located at about 2500 meters in elevation, and it cascades non-stop down the mountainside into the lake, which has a full pool level of 1975 meters, so the total height of the falls should be in the vicinity of 525 meters. At the top of the falls the stream makes a sheer leap of at least 120-130 meters in a narrow alcove carved into the side of the mountain. Based on imagery available in Google Earth it appears that below this leap the stream is diverted into an underground tunnel as part of the hydroelectric system in the valley below (it could also be natural, but a man-made diversion makes the most sense given the development in the area), so the rest of the falls may be partially or entirely de-watered depending on how much of the stream is being diverted.
