About This Spring

## Overview Gold Strike Hot Springs is a stunning series of natural hot mineral springs tucked deep within Gold Strike Canyon, just south of Hoover Dam near Boulder City, Nevada. Situated close to the Arizona–Nevada border along the Colorado River corridor, these geothermally heated springs seep from the canyon's volcanic rock walls and collect in several inviting rock-lined soaking pools. Water temperatures typically range from 98°F to 110°F, with some pools reaching as high as 109°F — warm enough for a deeply relaxing soak after the challenging hike in. The springs owe their heat to residual geothermal activity in the region. Magma-heated groundwater rises through fractures in the ancient volcanic rock of the Black Canyon area, emerging along the cliff faces as warm, mineral-rich seeps and cascades. For centuries, people have sought out these hot springs for warmth, relaxation, and the perceived healing properties of the mineral water. Today, Gold Strike Hot Springs remains one of the most popular — and most rewarding — backcountry hot spring destinations in southern Nevada. No extra permits are required for daytime visits. However, overnight camping within the canyon is strictly prohibited. The hike is physically demanding, and all members of your group should be in good physical condition before attempting the trail. ## Directions Gold Strike Hot Springs cannot be reached by vehicle. The trailhead is accessed from a parking area off U.S. Highway 93, near the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (the bypass bridge just downstream of Hoover Dam). 1. **From Las Vegas**, take US-93 South (also signed as US-95 South) toward Boulder City and Hoover Dam. 2. Continue on US-93 past Boulder City. As you approach the Hoover Dam area, watch for the **Gold Strike Hot Springs Trailhead parking lot** on the left (east) side of the highway, located just before the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. 3. Park in the designated lot. The gravel trail begins at the trailhead and descends steeply into Gold Strike Canyon. 4. Follow the trail approximately **2 miles one way** down through the canyon toward the Colorado River. The route involves several **20-foot rope-assisted descents** over rock faces — these can be challenging for beginners. 5. The hot springs and soaking pools are found along the canyon floor as you approach the river. **GPS Coordinates:** 36.002764, -114.757626 ## What to Expect The hike into Gold Strike Canyon is a true desert adventure. The trail drops roughly 900 feet in elevation over about 2 miles, winding through narrow slot canyon sections with dramatic rock walls. Along the way, you'll encounter multiple rope-assisted scrambles — typically around 20 feet each — that require upper body strength and confidence on uneven terrain. Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential, and gloves can be helpful for the rope sections. Once you reach the canyon floor, you'll find several natural rock pools fed by hot mineral water seeping from the cliff walls. One popular pool features a sand-and-gravel bottom with water temperatures around 100°F — perfect for soaking. Some pools are hotter, approaching 110°F, so test the water before settling in. The mineral-rich water has historically been valued for its warmth and soothing qualities. A few important things to keep in mind: - **Start early.** Summer temperatures in this part of the Mojave Desert can be extreme. Beginning your hike at dawn helps you avoid the worst of the heat on the exposed sections of the trail. - **Seasonal closures:** The trail is typically closed by authorities from **mid-May through September** due to dangerously high temperatures. Always check current conditions before heading out. - **Water flow varies.** Depending on the time of year and recent weather, some of the springs may be dry or reduced to a trickle. - **Flash flood danger:** During monsoon season (roughly July through September), the narrow canyon is susceptible to sudden, life-threatening flash floods. Never enter the canyon if rain is forecast. - **Bring plenty of water and sun protection.** There is no shade for much of the hike, and the return trip is entirely uphill. Gold Strike Hot Springs rewards those willing to put in the effort with a truly unique experience — soaking in geothermally heated pools surrounded by towering canyon walls, just a short distance from one of America's most iconic dams.
