About This Waterfall
Great Falls was a name that was applied to a series of rapids along the Catawba River which was said to drop approximately 120 feet over a run of four miles. Most of the rapids have since been innundated due to the construction of several dams along the river, but a portion still remains visible - though dewatered - below the Fishing Creek Reservoir. It's not clear whether there was any part of these rapids that could legitimately be qualified as a waterfall; the rapids which have escaped innundation do not.
