About This Waterfall
Grinddalsfossen is found about 2km southeast of the town of Geiranger. From the ferry terminal follow Route 63 south for 2.3km to the lower bridge at the base of the falls (very little can be seen) or for just under 3.5km to the second bridge where about 100 feet of the falls can be seen. The best views of the entire waterfall which we could find were from the parking lot of the Geiranger Fjordcenter which is found near the south end of town and is signed prominently. The Geirangerfjord is a location renowned throughout the world as one of the most scenic landscapes on earth. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 and it harbors one of the highest densities of waterfalls in Norway. Of those waterfalls within its immediate vicinity Grinddalsfossen is among those which many visitors will notice but few will pay attention to. The falls cascade approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) from a high hanging valley immediately above the town of Geiranger, the lower reach of the cascades crossing the narrow winding road which climbs from the town into the mountains to the south. Though the falls are of considerable height, because the drop is entirely non-vertical in nature, the entire series is difficult to see from any one location. As the road crosses the stream near the base of the falls approximately 30-40 meters worth of the falls can be seen up close. The majority of the falls can be seen from various locations around Geiranger, but at a distance, and as a result this waterfall is not highly regarded.
