Grófarfoss

Grófarfoss is found approximately 25.5km east from the turn to Skaftafell, or 29km west of Jökulsarlón, right above Highway 1. The falls are visible from the highway and are very easy to see when approaching from the east. There is an unmarked gravel just east of the stream crossing which runs a short distance to a parking area with a few benches made out of large chunks of rock. A short trail leads up to the falls via a stile crossing the adjacent sheep fence.Grófarfoss is a presumably unofficial name for a waterfall which can be easily spotted along Highway 1 as it rounds the southern tip of the Öraefajökull Volcano, the country's tallest mountain, along the south coast of Iceland. The falls plunge 96-feet out of a very narrow canyon carved into the ubiquitous basalt bedrock formations that permeate Iceland, flowing gently through a grassy glade below, thence under the highway, through some farm land, and out to the ocean. The narrow, constricted gorge above the visible portion of the falls suggests there are likely multiple additional tiers or separate waterfalls found upstream along the creek, and topographic data supports this idea, but whether they will be visible by climbing up the falls to look down into the canyon from above is not known (nothing is visible from below).We're not sure if the name we have listed for this waterfall is appropriate in the Icelandic language, but the name breaks down to translate to something like "(Rough or Coarse) River", and omitting the -lækur (river) portion of it seems to follow convention. We haven't been able to find any indication that the falls have a recognized name.
