About This Waterfall

Grundarfoss is visible along Route 54 on the north side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, about 2km east of the center of the town of Grundarfjörður. Watch for a rough gravel pull off on the south side of the road where the falls can be taken in.Grundarfoss is one of the largest waterfalls on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. The falls plunge off a huge cathedral-like wall of basalt, plunging about 230 feet into an amphitheater bowl, just outside of the town of Grundarfjörður. The falls are easily seen from Highway 54 which encircles the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, but whether obtaining closer views is permissible is not known (there may or may not be private land in between the road and the falls). Because we were not able to approach the falls closely when we surveyed it, the height we have listed for this waterfall is estimated based on topographic data, however the topographic maps are ambiguous themselves, so we can only make an educated guess based on our observations and the data the maps provide - we would expect the margin of error to be roughly +/- 30 feet.
