Description

From the Hokkaido Expressway in Asahikawa, exit onto Rt 37 and proceed 13km to Rt 1160 and turn left. Route 1160 will eventually turn into Route 213, which will end 19km from Asahikawa at the small parking area at Tenninkyo. The falls are reached via an easy walk of about half of a kilometer.Japan is known for its sensuous, curvaceous waterfalls and Hagoromo Falls does nothing to upset that stereotype. What makes Hagoromo so unique is its size coupled with its grace. Standing about 820 feet tall, Hagoromo Falls is the tallest on the island of Hokkaido and is presumed the third tallest waterfall in Japan based on what we currently know.
The falls actually consist of two streams, the Chuubetsu Kawa and an unnamed tributary, which merge halfway down the falls and continue on as one stream over the final leaps. The Chuubetsu Kawa falls over four distinct drops to form the bulk of the fall before the unnamed tributary enters in a single horsetailing fall of about half the height of the four drops opposite. The combined waters then fall over five additional steps and terminate in the pool below the overlook. The name Hagoromo means "feathered robe" or "celestial robe" depending on varying sources. Either moniker is appropriate as the appearance of Angel wings is achieved in the lowest 3 tiers of the falls are visible from the base, veiling down the volcanic wall of the valley in a beautiful flowing display.
