About This Waterfall
Take US Highway 101 north from Hoodsport for about 13.75 miles, or south from Brinnon for 11-1/2 miles, to Hamma Hamma Road - also signed for the Hamma Hamma Recreation Area, and National Forest Road 25. Follow Hamma Hamma Road for 6.4 miles to a T-junction shortly after crossing Cabin Creek (the crossing is not signed). Turn right following the signs to the Lena Lake trailhead, and continue another 7 miles to a large pullout just before the high concrete bridge spanning the Hamma Hamma River at the end of the road (the Mildred Lakes Trailhead is on the immediate other side of the bridge). The falls are found directly below the bridge here; views over the top are afforded from the bridge itself, but direct views of the falls are only accessible from a fairly steep, narrow path that drops down from the pullout before the bridge. Be careful along the unguarded cliffs, they drop off very steeply.Hamma Hamma Falls is the uppermost and largest of the various accessible waterfalls found along the Hamma Hamma River. Situated directly underneath a high concrete bridge that literally goes nowhere, the Hamma Hamma River plunges over a pair of back-to-back cataracts with drops of 18 and 66 feet respectively. The falls are situated high enough up in the river's basin that seasonal fluctuations in the volume of the river will be noticeable. The basin above the falls covers about 7.3 square miles in area, ranges in elevation from about 1800 feet to over 6000 feet above sea level, and harbors six lakes of modest size. The high elevation of the drainage ensures that it receives ample snow pack in the winter months, but as there is no permanent snow or ice feeding the river, once the winter snow melts out the volume of the river does drop considerably.
