About This Waterfall
Heggheimsfossen can be found 7.6 km north of the town of Skei along the E39 in Våtedalen. There is no space to park immediately across from the falls, so instead look for a pull off on the west side of the road about 400 meters to the south of the falls. Additionally a small road branches off from the E39 between this pullout and the falls which may also provide space for one car to park without blocking traffic.Heggheimsfossen is a lofty but moderately low volume waterfall found adjacent to the E39 between the towns of Skei and Byrkjelo. The falls are fed from a small basin harboring a modest lake, the outlet of which cascades gently down a tundra like valley before encountering the steep wall of Våtedalen, where it plunges and skips about 410 meters (1,345 feet) to the valley floor. The drop begins nearly vertically, becoming less steep as it progresses to a step in the valley wall, at which point it drops vertically again to the base of the falls. Surrounding the falls on both sides of the highway is extensive pasture land, throughout which sheep can be seen grazing on the grassy hillsides. When surveyed in June 2011, several dozen sheep were marching right down the middle of the highway to find different areas to graze, seemingly unfazed by the passing cars and trucks (and most passing cars seemed unfazed by a herd of sheep roaming in the middle of a highway). We have not been able to find any official title for this waterfall. For the purpose of reference we have opted to list it after the mountain immediately south of the falls, Heggheimsfjellet, however there is a very likely possibility that there may be a more colloquially accepted name for the falls. The falls have also been referred to as Stigenfossen and Støylsfossen, though it's not clear whether either of these names is more common or accepted in use.
