About This Spring
## Overview The Heiligenborn-Quelle is a public drinking spring located near the village of Saalhausen, a district of Lennestadt in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The name "Heiligenborn" translates roughly to "Holy Spring" or "Sacred Well," suggesting a long tradition of reverence for this water source — a naming convention common throughout the Sauerland, where natural springs have been valued by local communities for centuries. Nestled along a scenic hiking trail in the forested hills above Saalhausen, the Heiligenborn-Quelle has historically been used as a drinking water source by hikers and locals alike. The Sauerland region is known for its mineral-rich geology, and many of its springs have been prized for their fresh, clean-tasting water. Visitors have reported that the water from the Heiligenborn-Quelle tastes crisp and refreshing, though as with any natural spring, water quality can vary with weather and seasonal conditions. The spring sits at an elevation in the wooded landscape between Saalhausen and the hamlet of Milchenbach, making it a rewarding stop along one of the area's well-marked hiking routes. ## Directions 1. The route is well-signposted toward the "Alpenhaus," making it straightforward to follow. The trail passes through the characteristic mixed forests of the Sauerland — expect beech, spruce, and oak trees providing shade and a peaceful atmosphere. The spring itself is located on the left side of the trail and is a modest but charming natural feature. It has historically served as a refreshment stop for hikers exploring the network of trails in the hills above Saalhausen. The terrain is gentle enough for most fitness levels, and the paved surface makes it accessible even in damp conditions, though proper hiking footwear is still recommended. The area is especially beautiful in spring and autumn when the forest canopy is at its most colorful. Saalhausen itself is a well-known spa and health resort village (Kneipp-Kurort), so a visit to the Heiligenborn-Quelle can easily be combined with exploring the village's other wellness and nature offerings.
