About This Waterfall
Hickory Nut Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The falls are often claimed to be 400 feet tall, however more recent estimates place it at just a hair over 350 feet. Lidar data available from the USGS suggests it may actually be closer to 300 feet tall, however the data isn't quite as detailed as is necessary to make a firm assessment, so it's likely an on-site survey will have to be conducted in order to determine once and for all an exact height for the falls. The falls were featured prominently in the finale of the Michael Mann movie "Last of the Mohicans".The USGS GNIS database lists this waterfall using the spelling "Hickorynut". This spelling seems to be incongruent with all historical, colloquial, and common uses of the name which break it into two words, and the precedent for this use dates back as far as the 1800s.
