About This Waterfall
The Rideau Canal bypasses this waterfall, and water level control dam was built at the top of the falls in the 1830s to regulate the level of the river above the canal. While the dam does divert some water to the canal, it isn't a continuous flow like a hydroelectric system, so the falls aren't heavily affected. The official name of this waterfall is Prince of Wales Falls, however the name Hogs Back Falls is much more commonly used, and is for all intents and purposes the correct name.
