Horseshoe Creek Falls

Description

Take SR 503 to the town of Chelatchie and turn east onto NE Healy Road. Follow this road, which becomes FSR 54 after a couple miles, for 9 miles and bear left (uphill) on FSR 57 (54 turns to gravel at this point while 57 remains paved). Just over one mile further turn left onto FSR 5701 (still paved) and follow it to its end 3 3/4 miles further at the Siouxon Creek Trailhead. Horseshoe Creek Falls is found 1.4 miles along the trail below the footbridge spanning the creek. About 500 feet past the bridge a spur trail branches to the left to reach the base of the falls.Horseshoe Creek Falls is the first major waterfall encountered along the Siouxon Creek trail. The falls stand 57 feet tall, dropping over three tiers - a broad veiling fan of 48 feet, followed by two additional drop of 4 and 5 feet respectively. The falls are situated in a heavily forested ravine with an exposure to the northwest, so attractive as the falls may be, they suffer from a bad case of afternoon sunlight and can be quite difficult to photograph well unless clouds are present. Due to the small drainage area of Horseshoe Creek the falls are best seen during the spring months, and can become somewhat obstructed at low water due to the channeling in the bedrock and logs laying across the falls.
