About This Spring
## Overview Hot Well Dunes Hot Springs is a unique desert oasis located in southern Arizona's San Simon Valley, within Graham County near the small town of Bowie. Situated on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, this site combines the thrill of off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation with the relaxation of natural geothermal hot springs — a combination that's hard to find anywhere else in the state. The hot springs here originate from a geothermal well that was drilled in the 1920s during early efforts to tap into the region's artesian water supply. The well struck hot water, and over the decades the site evolved into a beloved free recreation area. The BLM eventually developed the area, installing two concrete soaking tubs fed by the geothermal water, which flows at temperatures reported to reach approximately 106°F (41°C). The surrounding landscape encompasses over 2,000 acres of open sand dunes designated for OHV use, making it a popular destination for ATV riders, dirt bikers, and campers alike. ## Directions 1. From **Bowie, AZ**, head south on the road toward the San Simon Valley. 2. Take **Hackberry Road** south from Interstate 10 (Exit 362 or Exit 366 near Bowie — look for BLM signage for "Hot Well Dunes"). 3. Continue south on the dirt road for approximately **25 miles**. The road is generally passable for passenger vehicles in dry conditions, but a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. 4. Follow the BLM signs directing you to the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area. The hot spring tubs are located near the main camping area. *Note: Cell service is extremely limited in this area. Download offline maps or have printed directions before heading out. The GPS coordinates (32.5205, -109.4407) should guide you to the general area.* ## What to Expect Upon arrival, you'll find two concrete soaking tubs filled with naturally heated geothermal water. The tubs are first-come, first-served and are a welcome reward after a day of riding the dunes or exploring the desert. The water has been described by visitors as warm and mineral-rich, with temperatures that can vary seasonally but are generally quite hot — some visitors recommend visiting during the cooler months (October through April) for the most comfortable soaking experience. The surrounding area is wide-open desert with rolling sand dunes, offering over 2,000 acres of terrain for off-highway vehicles. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the BLM land, and there are basic amenities including vault toilets near the tubs. There are no fees for camping or soaking. A few things to keep in mind: - **Water and supplies**: There are no services, potable water sources, or shade structures at the site. Bring everything you need, including plenty of drinking water. - **Best season**: Fall through spring offers the most pleasant temperatures for both soaking and camping. Summer heat in the San Simon Valley can be extreme. - **Night soaking**: The remote location means minimal light pollution, making for spectacular stargazing from the tubs after dark. - **Etiquette**: The tubs are shared by all visitors. Please keep them clean and be respectful of others waiting for a soak. Hot Well Dunes Hot Springs is a true off-the-beaten-path gem — part adventure, part relaxation, and entirely worth the drive into the Arizona desert.
