Take Highway 1 to Route 50 - either south or north of Borgarnes - and follow Route 50 to Route 518 (follow signs toward Reykholt). Follow Route 518 for approximately 23km, then turn left where signs point to Hraunfossar. Follow the trail along the rim of the gorge to multiple vistas of the falls in only a few hundred feet.Hraunfossar is one of Iceland's most unique waterfalls. Formed by a large volume of water which pours out of dozens, if not hundreds, of seeps along the edge of the Hallmundar lava field, the falls drop up to 41-feet directly into the Hvitá (up to because not all sections of the falls emerge at equal elevations along the gorge wall). The tallest portion of the falls is also the most voluminous and prominent, visible from the developed viewpoints along the area's trails. Looking downstream one can see dozens of other smaller falls and cascades entering the river via ledges of 2-5 feet or more. The main portion of the falls has a width of approximately 650-feet, but taking into account all the smaller seeps and springs further down the canyon, the whole formation stretches for as much as 1700-feet in breadth. The name of this waterfall translated to english is Lava Falls.
