Hunt Creek Falls
Hunt Creek Falls and the entire former Bradwood Mill site is all currently private property, and we're told the landowner doesn't want people scrambling down to visit the falls. Please be respectful of the area and do not attempt to visit unless the access situation changes.Hunt Creek empties into the Columbia River at the Bradwood Mill site, the location of the former Bradley-Woodward Lumber Company. Just above the old mill ponds Hunt Creek plunges down a pretty waterfall as it hits the Columbia River plain, falling in steps of 15 and 46 feet amid a pretty glen surrounded by maple trees. Though nearly 30 miles inland from the coast as the bird flies, the base of Hunt Creek Falls is situated only 15 vertical feet above sea level, and while the Columbia River's incessant power keeps all tidal action downstream from Astoria, if a decent sized Tsunami were to strike the northern Oregon coast, there is a considerable chance it might actually reach this waterfall.
The falls are unfortunately located on private property, and we've heard from second hand sources that the landowner does not want the public accessing the falls. Please be respectful and stay away. The Bradley-Woodward Mill (which was pretty much solely responsible for the foundation of the tiny town of Bradwood) occupied the large flat area along the Columbia River just north of Hunt Creek Falls. The mill operated from 1930 to 1962, and what was left after it closed burnt down in 1965. Today only a handful of people live in the area and that's left of the area is a large scale sand pit (presumably used in industry of some sort). It's unclear whether Hunt Creek or it's falls played any part in the operation of the mill - it's small size would probably preclude such from happening - but two former roads lead past the falls and suggest it may have been utilized in some way or another for an industrial purpose, though no evidence could be seen to suggest this fate.
