About This Waterfall
Take Highway 1 east from the town of Hvolsvöllur for 27.6km, then turn north (left) onto Route 246 - this road loops back to Highway 1 another four kilometers to the west and can be approached from that side as well. Follow Route 246 past several farms for another 2.4km to the bridge over the stream, where the falls are visible a short distance upstream. The falls can also be seen distantly across Highway 1.Íráfoss is a rather significant waterfall which can be seen from the Ring Road a few kilometers to the east of Seljelandsfoss, but because it isn't directly along the highway itself it is rarely visited up close. The falls plunge 135-feet in a narrow plume which impacts on a skirt of rock near its base and sprays outward for its final descent. Above the falls spires of basalt guard the canyon which the falls pour out of, creating some very striking geologic adornments to the scene. A second waterfall well upstream of Íráfoss can be seen from the main highway, but not from the base of the falls, and whether and how it may be accessible is not known. We could not find any documentation of an official or colloquially accepted name for this waterfall, so we have referred to it after its watercourse for the time being.
