Jackson Falls

Description

Jackson Falls is found in the center of Jackson just off of Route 16, about halfway between Conway and Pinkham Notch. Take Route 302 to Route 16 in Glen, then follow Route 16 north for about 2.3 miles and turn right onto Route 16A in Jackson. Follow 16A for a little more than half of a mile, then turn right onto Carter Notch Road (Route 16B) just after crossing Wildcat Brook. The falls will be visible to the right of the road after after about one-quarter of a mile, with parking a short distance further up along the road.Jackson Falls is a long series of small falls and cascades along Wildcat Brook in the center of the village of Jackson, a short distance from where it merges with the Ellis River. The falls have a cumulative drop of about 80 feet in a run of nearly 800 linear feet, though much of that distance is made up in pools and flat stretches of stream between the various upper tiers of the falls. Though no single section of the falls stands more than about 30 feet tall, there is a lot of real estate to explore here.
The first four steps in the falls each drop 5-10 feet, one of which includes a small dam, possibly left over from a long abandoned mill site. Upon reaching the fifth drop the proper of the falls suddenly materializes as the brook splits into two distinct channels which funnel around a protruding bedrock island, sliding and cascading around 30 feet down slabs and into pothole pools before mellowing again in a few more tiny steps in the 2-4 foot tall range.
