Jumbo Mountain Falls

Description

Jumbo Mountain Falls is a low volume, and potentially seasonal waterfall which occurs along an unnamed stream draining a small basin on the southeast side of Jumbo Mountain, just outside of Darrington. The falls drop approximately 200 feet in a single narrow plunge type waterfall situated near the bottom end of a long, narrow canyon which runs south from near the summit of Jumbo Mountain. The creek above the falls has a drainage basin size of about 0.4 square mile and features no permanent snow or ice. While this part of Western Washington does receive heavy precipitation, the more limited size of the drainage area plus its south and easterly exposure will not promote long term snow pack retention, so the spring melt period will most likely not persist past the end of June or early July in most years. Because of the lower volume of the stream, the wide rocky channel of the creek may promote subsidence of the water in various locations, including where it crosses the Clear Creek Road. Visitors contemplating visiting the falls can use neighboring Asbestos Creek as a reference however - if there is ample flow in Asbestos Creek, this stream should also be flowing.
