Name of Waterfall

Kvernhusfossen

Description

Take Route 55 north from the town of Sogndalsfjøra to the town of Gaupne, and then turn left onto Route 604 (just before crossing the river), signed for Nigardsbreen and Jostedalsbreen National Park. Drive 14.3 km up the valley and turn right at the sign for Vigdalen. Immediately after the turn park in the large pull off before crossing the bridge, Kvernhusfoss will be visible across the river from this point. The Vidøla is a major tributary to the Jostedøla River in Jostedalen. Just above where the two streams meet the Vigdøla drops down a series of waterfalls, Kvernhusfossen represents the final in this series of falls. The falls consist of a single veiling cascading type fall which drops 32 meters over a rugged bedrock outcrop, followed by a steep runout among large boulders before the river enters the Jostedøla. While the river heads in several lobes of the Spørtegg Glacier, the flow of the river appears to be greatly reduced at the falls, which would indicate that the majority of the flow is likely diverted into a hydroelectric generating facility, and as a result the falls may not appear significant during certain times of the year.We are fairly confident this is the correct waterfall to bear the name Kvernhusfossen, however there are two additional waterfalls upstream from this one and some maps have marked this fall seemingly incorrectly as Håvardsfossen (which is almost certainly located further upstream).
