Kyrfoss

Description

Kyrfoss is found near Øvre Årdal en route to the Vettismorki trail in Utladalen. Take Route 53 to Øvre Årdal, then turn north onto Route 301, following signs pointing to Vettisfossen. Drive about 6km up the road and watch for a large informal campsite on the left near the river. Park here and look up the cliffs above the road to see the falls plunging down the side of the valley. If you have trouble finding the spot, its about 3/4 of a kilometer before reaching the large parking area for the Vetti trail at the base of Hjellefossen.Kyrfoss is a minor waterfall found at the lower end of the Utladalen near the town of Øvre Årdal. The falls are too distant from the road along the valley floor to accurately measure, but based on topographic data its total drop appears to be roughly 560 meters (1,835 feet), with at least three major tiers and several minor drops interspersed in between. Exactly how each fall measures is not yet clear, however the uppermost and largest drop of the series looks to fall at least 250-275 meters on its own.
The stream which produces Kyrfoss drains from an area that covers approximately 2/3 of a square kilometer, and should be expected to be highly dependent on precipitation in order to remain flowing for any length of time. When the falls were surveyed in June of 2011 they were flowing strong following several days of heavy rain. Seasonal snow melt should sustain the flow of the stream until the early summer months, but by the end of August expect the flow to reduce to just a trickle without rain to replenish it.
