About This Waterfall
From Reykjavik take Highway 1 north to the town of Borgarnes, and continue about 1.9km north from the junction in the middle of town to a roundabout. Take Route 54 heading west towards Stykkishólmur at the roundabout, and follow Route 54 for another 6.2km to a turn out on the left side of the road where the falls are visible. The lower waterfall can be seen from the road about 600m before reaching the turnout.Langárfoss is a small roadside waterfall found just downstream of where Route 54 crosses the Langá just outside the town of Borgarnes. The falls drop about 9 feet where the river makes a sharp Z-shaped bend around and through a protrusion of volcanic rock, splitting into several channels as it does so. On the far side of the falls a fish ladder has been blasted into the bedrock to accommodate fish passage, resulting in a portion of the river always being diverted away from the natural part of the falls. A sign adjacent to the road labels this waterfall as Skuggafoss, however information from the National Land Survey of Iceland indicates the name of this fall to properly be Langárfoss, while Skuggafoss is the next waterfall upstream along the same river. Additionally, there is another waterfall of about 5-10 feet in height on the river a short distance downstream of Langárfoss which can also be easily seen from Route 54 - we did not have time to stop to document it.
