Layng Falls

Description

Layng Falls is one of the largest (potentially the largest) waterfalls in the Boulder Creek basin portion of Ohanapecosh Park within Mount Rainier National Park. The falls drop approximately 270 feet where its unnamed stream sheets down one of the larger sections of cliffs in Ohanapecosh Park. The Wonderland Trail crosses about one quarter of a mile above the falls, but offers no views up close - the closest view from on trail appears to be from about a mile northwest of Indian Bar where the trail crests the moraine of the former Ohanapecosh Glacier. The falls can also be seen distantly from the high point on Cowlitz Ridge about a mile south of Indian Bar.Layng Falls was marked by name on David H. White's 1928 Atlas of Pierce County, but has not been observed marked by name on any other map since. It's possible that the name of the falls was coined by White or by contributors to his mapping efforts. The name may also predate the 1928 map since several other waterfalls in the area have names originating 10-15 years earlier as well.
