About This Spring

## Overview Linn Run/Forbes Forest Spring is a public drinking spring located within the scenic grounds of Linn Run State Park in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Nestled in the Laurel Highlands region of the Allegheny Mountains, the spring sits along Rock Run Road and has long served as a convenient water stop for park visitors, campers, and hikers exploring the surrounding Forbes State Forest. The spring flows continuously from two pipes set into a concrete basin, with a springhouse situated just above it. A roadside pull-off makes it easy to stop and fill water bottles. According to park rangers, the water is tested for bacteria at least once per month; however, it has been noted that a small amount of chlorine is added to the water as a treatment measure. While the spring has historically been used as a drinking water source by visitors, those sensitive to chlorine or with concerns about water quality should plan accordingly. Linn Run State Park encompasses approximately 612 acres of rugged, forested terrain and is bordered by the much larger Forbes State Forest. The park is known for its excellent trout streams — Rock Run and Linn Run — as well as the spectacular Adams Falls, a picturesque waterfall located along a short trail within the park. The area offers camping, picnicking, rustic rental cabins, and miles of hiking trails that wind through dense hemlock and hardwood forests. It's a beautiful, tranquil setting that makes the spring visit well worth the trip. ## Directions The spring is located at approximately 95 Rock Run Road, Stahlstown, PA 15687. Using the GPS coordinates with a navigation app is recommended, especially for first-time visitors.* ## What to Expect The spring is easy to access directly from the roadside — simply pull off at the concrete basin and fill up. Water flows continuously from two pipes, and the setup is designed to make bottle refilling straightforward. The springhouse above the basin adds a rustic, historic charm to the site. The surrounding park is a highlight in itself. Linn Run State Park is a popular destination for trout fishing (Rock Run and Linn Run are stocked streams), and the short hike to Adams Falls is a must-do for waterfall enthusiasts. The park offers tent and trailer camping as well as rustic cabins for overnight stays. Trails connect to the broader Forbes State Forest trail network, providing options for longer day hikes. The Laurel Highlands region is especially scenic in autumn when the hardwood forests put on a vivid display of fall color. Spring and summer bring lush greenery and active streams. Winter visits are possible but roads may be less maintained — check with the park office for seasonal conditions. Whether you're stopping for a quick water refill on a drive through the Laurel Highlands or spending a weekend camping and exploring, the Linn Run/Forbes Forest Spring is a convenient and scenic stop in one of western Pennsylvania's most beautiful state parks.
