Name of Waterfall

Little Falls

Description

Little Falls is a minor drop along the Potomac River about a mile upstream from the boundary with the District of Columbia. Just above the falls is a small concrete wier dam which directs a portion of the Potomac into the C&O Canal and during the summer months this can effectively reduce the falls to nothing - not because the water is diverted entirely, but because the falls are formed by what appears to be large river bars rather than bedrock formations itself. During high water there is a perceptible drop of perhaps 6-7 feet, excluding the dam. This is essentially a feature which is borderline for qualifying as a legitimate waterfall. Given the behavior of the river during lower flow periods and the fact that the drop does not appear to be formed by a sheet of solid bedrock, we have opted to disqualify this entry.
