Name of Waterfall

Marsåfossen

Description

Marsånafossen is very prominently visible across Oppstrynvatnet and can be seen from many locations along a stretch of Highway 15 running for about 7km along the shore of the lake starting about 13.5km east of the town of Stryn and heading east toward Oppstryn. The base of the falls can be reached by turning north onto Route 722 in Storesunde and following it east along the north shore of the lake for 8km.The stream Marsåna can be seen falling prominently over a large waterfall with two major steps dropping back-to-back into the north side of Oppstrynvatnet. The falls drop approximately 180 meters (590 feet) in total, with the two largest tiers falling about 50 meters (165 feet) and 110 meters (360 feet) respectively, with approximately 20 meters (65 feet) worth of smaller falls and cascades between the two. Route 722 crosses directly below the base of the falls on the north side of the lake and would provide much more interesting, albeit foreshortened perspectives on the waterfall.
Additional waterfalls occur along the stream further up the mountainside, but they are both difficult to see from across the lake due to the shape of the canyon, and separated enough from the main part of the falls that they should be considered separate waterfalls. The stream drains from a modest basin which harbors a few small lakes and tarns but no permanent ice or snow fields, so the volume of water present in the falls will most likely fluctuate over the seasons.
