About This Spring

## Overview Miette Hot Springs, nestled deep within Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies, is widely recognized as the hottest natural hot spring in the Canadian Rockies. The source water emerges from the mountainside at a scorching 54°C (approximately 129°F), making it one of the most geothermally impressive springs in the country. Before reaching the bathing pools, the water is cooled to a more comfortable 40°C (approximately 104°F) so visitors can soak safely. The springs have a long history of use. Indigenous peoples of the region are believed to have known about the hot mineral waters long before European explorers arrived. The springs were developed for public use in the early 20th century as part of the broader effort to promote tourism in Canada's national parks. The current facility, operated by Parks Canada, features a modern pool complex set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountain peaks and dense boreal forest — a setting that many visitors consider among the most scenic of any hot spring in North America. The mineral-rich waters at Miette are fed by precipitation that percolates deep underground, where it is heated by geothermal energy before rising back to the surface through faults in the surrounding limestone and shale. The water has historically been noted for containing dissolved sulfates, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals, which have long been associated with therapeutic and relaxation benefits. Visitors frequently describe the water as having a mild sulfur scent, characteristic of natural hot springs in the Rockies. ## Directions Miette Hot Springs is located at the end of Miette Hot Springs Road, a scenic drive within Jasper National Park. 1. From the town of Jasper, head east on Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) toward Edmonton. 2. After approximately 42 km (26 miles), watch for the signed turnoff to Miette Hot Springs Road on the south (right) side of the highway. 3. Turn onto Miette Hot Springs Road and follow it for approximately 18 km (11 miles) as it winds through the Fiddle River valley. 4. The road ends at the Miette Hot Springs parking area and facility. Note: A valid Jasper National Park pass is required to enter the park. Passes can be purchased at park gates or online through Parks Canada. The road to Miette is typically open from mid-May through mid-October, weather permitting, and is closed during the winter months. ## What to Expect ### The Pools The facility features three pools. Two are hot mineral pools maintained at temperatures between approximately 36°C and 40°C (98–104°F), fed by the natural spring water. A third pool is a cool plunge pool, perfect for alternating between hot and cold soaks — a practice many believe helps improve circulation and allows the skin to better absorb the minerals in the water. Before entering the pools, staff will ask you to rinse off in the showers provided. Footwear must be removed when walking between pools. These rules help maintain water quality and keep the facility in compliance with health regulations — following them is important to ensure the springs remain open for everyone. ### Facilities & Amenities Male and female changing rooms are available on-site, equipped with lockers (tokens available for a small fee). Visitors can bring their own towels and swimsuits or rent them at the facility. The Fiddle Valley Café, located at the springs, serves sandwiches, salads, soups, and snacks. A gift shop is also on-site for souvenirs from your Jasper National Park visit. ### Admission (prices may vary by season — check Parks Canada for current rates) **Single Visit:** - Adult (18–64): $7.05 - Youth (3–17): $5.15 - Senior (65+): $6.15 - Children (under 3): Free - Family (2 adults, 2 youth): $20.35 - Extra Youth: $3.40 **Day Pass:** - Adult (18–64): $9.55 - Youth (3–17): $7.55 - Senior (65+): $8.55 - Children (under 3): Free - Family (2 adults, 2 youth): $28.50 - Extra Youth: $5.40 **Rentals:** - Swimsuit: $1.90 - Towel: $1.90 - Additional locker token: $1.00 ### Seasonal Hours (approximate — confirm with Parks Canada before visiting) - **Early May to mid-June:** 10:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. - **Mid-June to early September:** 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. - **Early September to mid-October:** 10:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. - **Mid-October to early May:** Closed for the season ### Nearby Hiking The area around Miette Hot Springs offers excellent hiking opportunities.
