About This Waterfall

The Mill Creek Falls trail starts at the Visitor Center just north of the southern entrance station in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The trail begins by dropping down to a footbridge over Sulphur Creek, then begins climbing steadily along the side of the mountain, slowly and steadily gaining elevation and reaching the overlook for the falls just over a mile and a half from the parking lot.At the point where East Sulphur Creek and Bumpass Creek converge the collective stream forms one of the best waterfalls in the Lassen area. Both streams plunge independently for about 35 feet into an alcove so narrow that the stream almost mingle mid-fall. Upon entering a small pool in the alcove the waters then spill an additional 40 or so feet to the floor of the canyon (we didn't measure the split of each tier when we surveyed the falls in July 2009). That both streams originate from the slopes of an active volcanic complex, the water is stained with various minerals and gasses, giving it an opaque whitish-gold hue.Though the stream the falls occur along is technically not Mill Creek, the East and West Forks of Sulphur Creek merge downstream of the falls to form Mill Creek, so it would follow that at one point this stream was probably considered Mill Creek and the name was accidentally adjusted over time.
